Welcome to Learn with Buggy Lu: Learning at Home Made Simple

Hi friends, and welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. My name is Kimberly, and I wear a lot of hats—wife, mom, and literacy specialist with over 20 years of experience in early childhood education. But at the heart of everything I do is one simple belief: learning starts at home, and it can be joyful, playful, and stress-free.

As parents, we know that life is busy—between school drop-offs, dinner plans, and those “Mom, where’s my shoe?” moments, it’s easy to feel like we don’t have the time (or energy!) to add “teaching” into the mix. But here’s the secret: you’re already teaching your child every single day. Whether you’re reading a bedtime story, counting goldfish crackers at snack time, or singing silly songs in the car, those little moments are powerful building blocks for learning.

That’s exactly why I created Learn with Buggy Lu—to share practical, doable ideas for helping your little ones grow their love for reading, writing, and learning right at home.

Why Learning at Home Matters

Research shows that kids thrive when learning is reinforced outside the classroom. But it doesn’t have to look like worksheets or long lessons. It can be as simple as:

  • Reading a favorite book together and asking, “What do you think will happen next?”

  • Playing a rhyming game while folding laundry.

  • Using magnetic letters on the fridge to spell their name.

These small moments add up and give your child the confidence and foundation they need for success in school.

My Favorite Must-Haves for Literacy Learning at Home

Over the years, I’ve discovered that you don’t need a classroom full of supplies to support your child’s learning—you just need a few thoughtful tools. Here are some of my go-to favorites (all linked below so you can grab them easily on Amazon):

  • Magnetic Letters – Perfect for word play, spelling, and sound practice.

  • Whiteboard & Markers – Great for drawing, writing letters, and playing games like tic-tac-toe with words.

  • Story Cubes – A fun way to spark storytelling and creativity.

  • Fine Motor Tools – Tweezers, playdough, and scissors help build the hand strength kids need for writing.

What to Expect Here on the Blog

Every week, I’ll share easy-to-try learning activities, recommended tools and books, and tips that come from both my professional experience and my real-life “mom moments.” I want you to feel encouraged and empowered to weave learning into your family’s everyday routines—without feeling overwhelmed.

And because I know many of us love visual inspiration, I’ll also be curating Pinterest boards where you can see activities, products, and ideas all in one place. (Think of it as your quick-scroll toolbox for when you need fresh ideas!)
